The Oystercatcher was a bird we saw almost everywhere in Scotland. Well, the area we visited. And heard. Because you heard them before you saw them. I did not know they were so talkative. Now I do. :)

Birding at Öland may 2010

As mentioned before I was visiting Öland last weekend. It was my first trip to the irland in order to be birdwatching. So, for me, it was exciting. Badly enough it was mostly cold, raining and a lot of mist. Never the less, my fellow birders said that they never seen such wide variety of species. Even though the numbers of birds was much less. This morning I finished the count for my own photography.

Those 4 days, thursday to sunday, I managed to get 42 spieces "om film". Mostly bad but still. Fog  and distance is not a good combination for photography. Out of those species 25 was new to me so I will have a lot to do putting them all into the blog. :)

There is a fenomenon in Sweden, called "Larm" and "Drag". It means that people, that spot a rare bird, send out an alert on the bird. Telling others where to find it. Sometimes also watching it until more peopel arrives. That is "drag", when you respond to the alert and go to try to see the bird yourself. This was new to me, and I can understand why it is a popular thing to do. But sometimes I felt sorry for the bird.

One fun event occured though. On Öland there are a lot of cattle keeping the land from too much bushes. And now there was an alert for one bird, Citrine wagtail (citronärla) was found. One male was at the coast. A lot of people went there, walking a mile in fenced area that was wery wet. Carrying all equipment such as spotting scope and cameras. (thats me :) ) The bird was jumping up ans down on some rocks close to the water. All people rounded it on a couple of meters range.

Now, calltle area curious beings. Especially young ones. We heard the noise coming from behind us. The cattle was coming. They ran o teh side of the line. Roudned us and came in between the bird and the birders. I started to laugh, it was so fun. But the bird did not seem to mind. I tried to take photos on it behind the legs of the cattle. You don´t have more fun then you make of it yourself. Right! But I know some people was scared. And they started to move away. My company too. But as I started to pack I noticed one other bird on the ground in front of the birders. Common Ringed Plower (Större strandpipare) who ran front and back. It lookes as it was trying to scare off the cattle. And perhaps the people too. It probaly had a nest nearby. Such a great and brave soul. :)

To Oxelösund and the Baltic Sea

Ejder - Eider

This is the archipelago outside Oxelösund. I was longing for the ocean so I hit the road.
I did not see that much birds but some Eiders was swimming here and there. I had a nice afternoon at the rocks by the Baltic sea. :)

Oxelösund March 10th

Last wednedsay I went to Oxelösund, as I recieved a mail the evening before that they would have a birding session at a place called Ljungskärsflagen. I have never been there so it was  a great opportunity to me. It took me about 1.5h to get to the location at the coast of The Baltic Sea. It turned out to be great. Sun shining and temperature just above freezing. Some thawing going on.

We met at 13.30 and finished at 16.00. A short walk in the snow and forest with all my stuff was a bit hard though. But I managed.

A  black headed gull (skrattmås) met us on the parkinglot. (ad winter)

A beautiful Common Merganser male (storskrakshane)  swam in the harbour.

And finally I got a closer look at the Sea Eagles (havsörn)  that I hardly spotted last week.

The spotting scope turned out to be quite OK. But there is limits of course. The more experienced people among us said they spotted long tailed ducks (alfågel). But I just saw some white dots riding the waves. That is what experience is for I guess. :)

Ett tack till Kirsti som hjälpte till med identifiering, hon skrev: Den övre fågeln ser ut som en nybadad grönsångare..eller ev. gransångare. Men jag tror mer på grön! :)

Thanks to Kirsti who helped indentify the bird. She wrote: The bird looks like a new bathed Wood Warbler .. or..maybe a Common Chiffchaff. But I believe more on Wood Warbler.

Skådartur på cykel - Birding by bike

Idag cyklade jag ut för att leta reda på ett ställe där det brukar komma örnar. Och jag hittade det. Jag tror jag såg 6-7 st och både havsörn och kungsörn. Dessutom såg jag korpar. (Jag tyckte ju att kajorna var lite väl stora. ) Nu blev det 3 till för fågelbloggen

På väg tillbaka hamnade jag mitt i ett jaktlag. En massa karlar stod och sköt gräsänder för glatta livet. De sade att det var ingen fara att passera för de sköt bara uppåt. Men nog kändes det rätt otrevligt. Och att se änderna trilla ner i ett moln av fjäder var inte heller så kul.

Någon i jaktlaget pratade engelska. Tar de hit folk för att jaga änder?

Jag såg bla Kungsörn, Havsörn, Sångsvan, Knipa, Gräsand, Korp, Grönfink och gulsparv.

Today I took the bike to go and find a place where there were supposed to be some eagles. And I found it. I saw two kinds of eagles and then I spotted Ravens. (I thought the jackdaw was a bit big :) )

On my way back I ended up in the middle of a duck-hunt. A lot of people shooting mallards. That was not fun. To se the birds falling out of the sky in a cloud of feathers. A man said it was no danger to pass as they only shoot upwards, but it was somewhat scary anyway. Some of the persons spoke english. Do they bring people here to hunt ducks?

I spotted among others: Golden eagle, Sea eagle, Whooper Swan , Common Goldeneye, Mallard, Craven, European Greenfinch and Yellowhammer.

Bird Photography Weekly #60 Skådande vid Björkvik – Birding at Björkvik

Jag ju ute med ornitologerna igår. Som jag trodde blev det inte så mycket fågel skådat. De har rymt sin kos söderut. Vi såg i alla fall några betande sångsvanar tvärs över viken. Och en flygande varfågel. Men den fick jag ju ingen bild på.
Vi hade en trevlig och rätt skön förmiddag. Solen sken och vartefter förmiddagen skred blev det drägligt varmt.

I was out with the ornithologists yesterday. There are not much birds around now, but at least, we spotted some Whooper swans grazing across the water.

We had a great morning with a sun that eventually started to warm us up.

Ute med ornitologerna. - On tour with the ornithologists

Oj oj oj vad dom turerna kräver av kamera och objektiv. Idag börjar jag med att visa en bild på omgivningen så ni ska veta att jag inte tappat greppet helt. Sedan kommer ett par rovfåglar. Tagna på L Å N G T håll. Det var ju fågelräkning idag. De andra hittar jämt så där en 15-20 arter. Själv hittar jag bara så där en 7-8 för jag räknar bara dom jag har på bild. Idag blev det bara 4. Pgav det mörka väderleksläget blev de flesta fåglar bara fläckar. Ja, så kan det gå, men jag fick i alla fall koll på två nya. Även om de är suddiga
Platser o arter jag noterat: Hofsta, Edeby, Valla, Yngaren, Löten, Björkviks ponnyridskola, Marieberg, Hofsta, Stensjön. Fjällvråk, ormvråk, sånglärkor, blå kärrhök, ljungpipare, bergfink.

O dear, those trips takes a lot when it comes to camera and lenses. Today I show you an image of the surroundings to start with. Just so you don´t hink I lost the touch. Then I have two new birds of prey. New to me that is. Not sharp at all, but wheather conditions was dark and the birds flew in quite a distance. Fun to have them none the less.
