This day I witnessed a fight over territory between a Coot and a Horned Grebe pair.  It was quite intense but no one was injured. And the winner is ...... the Horned Grebe.

Today I only saw one Grebe so the other is probably laying on egg.

It does not look great with all the green stuff, algae,  on the water surface. But the birds don´t really seem to mind it.

 Hey, who is down there?

Dad, or is it mom, you have such big feet!

But your wings are small. How can you fly with them?

I´m hungry!

OK, will get you some food.

eh!!!!

I was waiting and waiting. The Horned Grebe seemed to have disappeared. So I gave up on the pleasure to be able to follow some young ones this summer. But then, the last day of June I spotted one on the other side of the little lake. Too far away for shots. But then the family came closer. Both parents and one young. And closer they came. It was like they wanted to show off. Yes, here we are and we have one baby. Enjoy!

I saw them today as well on the farther side of the lake. The little one has grown a lot. And now there are another family with one young on the other side of the road. There is a road going right in the middle of the little lake. So now one family on each side. Happy me!

And, also another good thing happened yesterday. I spotted the Common Moorhen with 5 newly hatched too. Images will be posted later on of them.

The Horned Grebe is back! I found 4 couples in the lake today and one of them already started nesting procedure.  It is a bit early yet for nesting but it is a good sign for times to come.

This is a behavior I have not noticed before. The adult took a white feather from it´s belly and gave it to the young who ate it. The behaviour is mentioned in the Swedish part of wiki. It is also mentioned on What Bird but the function don´t really seem to be known.

Finally life is thriving in the little pond. Now it is an exciting time to see how many couple will have young and how many will survive. Today I spotted three families of Horned Grebe and one family each of the two others. And a few gulls of course.

I was suspecting there would be young grebes that day so I went out. It was not easy to take shots in the hard rain balancing an umbrella and manouvering the camera with my long camera lens. The birds did not seem to fancy the hard rain either. Mom and dad grebe seemed all soaked up too.

Birding today

This is one of the places outside town where I can see some migrating birds.

Årta - Anas querquedula - Garganey
In that pond I saw this annoying bird today. So hard to get a shot of it. Every time I push the trigger it is gone. It is a small duck and hides in the grass or reed. And don´t want to be shot at. :(

Fiskgjuse - Pandion haliaetus - Osprey
Leaving the place I heard a sound above. Looking up to see this osprey. :)

Sävsparv – emberiza schoeniclus - Reed Bunting
Next place I found this reed bunting singing his heart out. I did not see if there were any females around to hear it.

The grebes went golden. I forgot to change the white balance. It was set to shadow and the sun was shining. I think that made this golden color. I kind of like it though, it suits the birds. :)

Grebes this week

Skäggdopping - Podiceps cristatus - Great Crested Grebe, nesting
NF Photo 110627 in Djulö lake

I was out kayaking yesterday and headed for a place with lots of waterlilys. Then I realised that a crested grebe was there, sitting on eggs. Totally open for everyone to see. Strangely, the bird did not leave the nest as they usually do when I approach.  Instead it spread teh wings and facial feathers to show how big and dangerous it was. I had expected the agressive sound they sometime perform in that situation. But it was silent. Strange! Maybe it was close to hatching the eggs. Well, I took some shots and then moved the kayak away from the nest.

Horned Grebe! The chicks are rather large by now. From the 7 pairs I found nesting there are only 5 chicks. Not much I think. There are 2 families with 2 chicks each, and one with a lone chick. The rest was unsuccessful. As you can see the greenary on the watersurface is overtaking the little lake.
