The birds are in full breeding plumage. And one pair mating. This is such a beautiful and interesting bird. Most of them breed up north in the mountain range. It is not that common. It is a wader, but it swims when they search or food. It seems like the male sits on the eggs and cares for the chicks while the female goes back south.
 .
See them in other plumage HERE.

Jorduggla - Asio flammeus - Short-eared Owl
NF Photo 1106 17 in Storulvån, Lill-Ulvåfjället/Ohtje

This owl tried to lure us away from a spot that probably was it´s nest. They  usually have the nest on the ground. I think you can see how "badly injured" it is on the wings in the last shot. It kept it´s eyes on us at all times. A thrill to watch. :)

Strange it seems like most sightings of this bird is in captivity  in zoos and such places. And that is where I saw this one. :( It was in The Marine Park of Mediterraneo in the island of Malta.

More from Malta

Kricka - Anas crecca - Eurasian Teal

Gravand - Common Shelduck
NF Photo 110425 at Mediterraneo, Malta

Those two ducks were also in captivity on Malta. But I post them as they are better then the shots I have before. Or different. The colors are not totally correct. What appers to be blue markings on the Eurasian Teal are in fact green. The strong sun made it difficult I guess.

This might be a cheat as I found these birds in captivity. But yet, it IS a new species to me. It does not come to Sweden as it is a Mediterranean species and I found it on Malta.

World Bird Wednesday XXXIII
a new meetingplace for our winged friends. Starts on Thursdays at 20.00 Stockholm time.
I hope to see some butterflies, dragonflies and bugs. Birds are also welcome, of course, as any other "flying objects". Known or unknown. And, as I hope, from all over the world.

This sparrow is closely related to the European House Sparrow. The male has brown head and white cheeks. The House Sparrow has grey head and light grey cheeks. The female resembles the House Sparrow female. They say the Italian is a hybrid between the Spanish Sparrow and the House Sparrow.
