This morning I woke up early and decided to go birding before breakfast. There is a place rather close where you can take a short forest walk and down to a small lake. If lucky there might be a bird or two there. And this morning I got myself a new species. This one is not that uncommon but it is mostly hidden and hard to find. Not it was sitting easy to spot in the treetop. With the camera ready I manage to get a few shots. It belongs to the woodpecker family.

Eurasian Coot vs Black-headed Gull

This was not fun to watch. The Coot raided the nest of the Gulls and it was not popular. The two species both has nests about 3m apart from one another. But this seems to show the Coot feasting on the Gulls eggs.  And the gulls can co nothing about it. In the third image you can see how the Coot seem to try to clean itself from remaining egg residues on it´s head.

A few ones today

Svartvit flugsnappare- Ficedula hypoleuca - Pied Flycatcher
They have finally arrived and are looking for a home.

Fisktärna - Sterna hirundo - Common Tern
It was low pressure and drizzling so all terns and gulls chased at the water surface

Sothöna - Fulica atra - Eurasian Coot
That is quite a nest she has created. It is the first time I have seen the Coot with such a visible nest. And there is another one also that has the nest a Horned Grebe used last year.

Rörhöna - Gallinula chloropus - Common Moorhen
The moorhen is shy and hard to spot. But today I was lucky. This one I have seen before and it probably has a mate and nest. Today I also spotted one on the other side of the road so maybe there are two couples. Now I´m looking forward to see chicks. :)

Well, almost disappointed. Took me only two sessions to get the image I set out to get.  The Black -headed Gull takes off and has still two toes in the water. I thought it would take longer but I guess I have too much experience with this kind of stuff. So, what next??
Fist attempt HERE

There are a lot of Black-headed Gulls in the little lake nowadays. Other birds in the lake are mallards, Horned Grebe and Eurasian Coots. I made a reflection on how the different species takes off from the water. The Coots and the Grebes runs on the water and seem to have a hard time getting up in the air. And you rarely see it as they seem to avoid flying. Mallards and other ducks has easier to get up in the air. But the Gulls, you almost don't even notice when they take off. They are just up in the air with seemingly no effort at all. I have often taken shots on birds landing on water but rarely when they take off. This is the first attempt to try to get an image at the very moment when they leave the water. Wish me luck! I´ll post when I get better ones then these.
