BPW 80 Eagle count at Gagnhäll

On our way to the spotting place on Lake Hjälmaren I spotted these iceicles

Me with a borrowed spotting scope. Since I bought my own I always get in trouble. What to bring? I am mostly a photographer. To see a bird 2 miles away and not have a photo is not in my interest really. Today we were supposed to walk over the lake and maybe in hip high with snow. Impossible to bring it all. So I chose the camera equipment as I was hoping for some eagleshots.  It was sunny and quite nice. -15 when we left at 8.00. But it got warmer pretty quick.

So, what about the birding? We spotted some Common Redpoll in the trees. And a Common Buzzard on our way home. But sitting in the car there was no photo on that one. So... eagles?
Those who counted said there was 26 to be seen during the two hours the count was on. But they were so far away that even with my 500 mm lens, and an expander, I did not see more then the photo shows. It is possible to see probably 3 eagles and some black birds. Raven, Jackdaw or Crows. But no chance of telling if the eagles are sea eagles or bald ones.

  1. It is fun going on the birding outings. And I know first hand it is not always possible to get good pictures so we must be happy with just seeing the bird and enjoy the sighting.

  2. It's always frustrating to see a bird and be unable to capture a photo. I have the same problem when I travel - what equipment to bring?

  3. My dilemma, if the bird is close enough, is whether to try to get a good photo or a good look at the bird. If I go for the photo, sometimes I don't get to see the bird at all

  6. I have never participated to a birding excursion before but I understand you very well, it must be sad not to be able to photograph the birds you observe. Have you ever tried digiscopy i.e. photography using a spotting scope?

  7. About digiscoping. I have ordered some equipment for that but for some reason I never get it. Maybe it migrated :(
I think I have to look elsewhere for something to use.

  8. It sounds like a great day out but very frustrating that you couldn't get the photos of the eagles. Wow! I don't think I could manage your cold temperatures!!

  9. carrying binos and camera equipment is a chore, definitely. My husband always has his binos on him, and i've always got the camera so it usually works out really well. Unless it's a really rare bird or new bird for me, and it's too far away, I forget even trying with the camera (i've actually become quite picky about the distance thing). So then I just borrow the binoculars. It is frustrating at times though, I hear you on that ! :)

  11. I think we all have the same problem of what to take the things we do for birds!
